Greeting gear-heads! Consumer Reports puts out a reputable list of top rated vehicles, which includes rankings on a number of categories. One of the most important, of course, is reliability.  The way that C.S. goes about creating this list is via data collected from an annual survey of its members.  The survey asks them to note any problems from a list of specified areas such as engine performance or electrical systems.  Looking over the list, Dallas Car Buyers can verify that all the vehicles on here are great long-term buys.

As one of the largest scientific reviews in the U.S., the Auto Questionnaire received feedback on approximately 420,000 vehicles in their latest survey.  The results of the 2020 report are compiled from the data gathered from the 2019 survey.  Below we have listed the top 10 most reliable cars according to Consumer Reports.

Mazda MX-5 Miata
Voted as the most reliable car you can own by Consumer Reports, the Mazda MX-5 Miata is also iconically fun to drive.  The car is a two-seat roadster with a peppy four-cylinder engine and many standard tech and safety features.  New standard features for 2020 include blind spot monitoring, lane departure warning, and forward collision warning with brake assist.  Many of these features combined with its optimum performance and upscale interior have the MX-5 Miata scoring high in many other categories as well.

Toyota Prius Prime
Introduced to the North American market in 2016,  The Prius Prime is the electric version of the much loved Toyota Prius.  In fact, the Prius Prime has become an even more appreciated version of the car due to its ability to go around 23 miles on electricity alone while maintaining the famed Prius reliability.  Just like the regular Prius, the Prime will alternate between gas and electric when not in EV mode, thus averaging approximately 50mpg.

Well known for its continued reliability, the Toyota Prius again makes the Consumer Reports list alongside the newer Prime version.  The Prius has scored a perfect 5/5 rating since 2009.  As the world’s most well-known hybrid vehicle, the Prius gets an impressive 52mpg and has optional All-wheel drive.  Overall, the car is comfortable and responsive, making it an excellent option for a commuter.

Lexus GX
The Lexus GX is a luxury SUV which has been in production for the past 10 years.  Remaining true to Lexus’ standards, the GX is a plush, comfortable, and quiet ride with an efficiently smooth 4.6 liter V8 engine.  Though the vehicle hasn’t changed much over the years, its ability to stay on this list of most reliable cars means Lexus is doing something right.  Driver assistance and collision avoidance technologies are now standard for the 2020 model.

Hyundai Kona
A surprise on the list of most reliable cars is the relatively new Kona.  This subcompact crossover SUV debuted in North America in 2019 and both the electric and non-electric versions were voted as the 2019 North American utility vehicle of the year.  The Kona looks and feels like a pricier vehicle than it is, making it an excellent choice for reliability and driveability.  Buyers can choose between two 4 cylinder engines, the best of which is a turbo-charged 1.6 liter that gives this reliable crossover a punchy kick.

Mazda CX-3
The Mazda CX-3 is also a newer addition to this list.  When it was originally introduced in 2016, this small crossover SUV was ranked below average in reliability.  However, Mazda has made drastic and notable improvements over the past few years.  The engine is similar to that of the MX-5 MIata.  And though considerable revving is needed for faster highway performance, the vehicle upshifts early which makes the buzzing engine noise barely noticeable on city streets.  This also makes for better fuel economy and ease of use.

Lexus NX
Not only did the Lexus NX make the list of top reliable cars on the market by Consumer Reports, but it has also ranked at the top by J.D. Power and Associates in its Vehicle Dependability Study for eight years in a row.  In addition the NX was awarded as “Top Pick Plus” for 2020 by the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety, which is the institute’s highest rating. The SUV is as comfortable and stylish as the Lexus name boasts and Consumer Reports also notes that the NX is the most fuel efficient out of all SUVs tested at 29 mpg overall.

Toyota 4-Runner
Though the Toyota 4-Runner has switched places with the Lexus NX on this list for 2020, the 4-Runner is still among the top for reliability and dependability.  These SUVs are built more for off-roading than city driving and as such are slightly pricey for a brand new model.  However, due to the longevity of the 4-Runner, consumers can buy a used model for a significantly cheaper price and still reap the benefits of driving a safe, reliable SUV.  Known for their ample cargo room and standard roof rails, the 4-Runner can tow up to 5,000 lbs, which is enough for a small trailer or boat.

Mazda CX-9
Though the Mazda CX-9 had some marginally lower scores in some areas of testing, such as emergency handling, and braking, the midsize SUV scored a 5/5 in reliability like the rest of the vehicles on this list.  The CX-9 scored high in most other categories, making it a great choice for consumers who desire a dependable SUV.  Like the other Mazdas on the list, the CX-9 has crisp driving dynamics making it fun to drive on and off the highway.  This SUV goes from 0 to 60 in 7.1 seconds and gets an impressive 26 mpg.

Lexus GS
Like the NX, the Lexus GS is a luxurious, comfortable and quiet SUV with excellent reliability and safety ratings.  Though the GS gets a lower 17 mpg overall, the vehicle is capable of towing up to 6,500 lbs.  And like the other Lexus’ the interior and exterior are superior to most other cars just like the upgrade options.  A new Off-Road Package has been added for the 2020 model, along with safety features such as paneramic view and under car cameras.  The Lexus GS rounds out the Consumer Reports list of most reliable cars at number 10.
